France (French Couple: Wife Pouring Her Husband a Drink)

1861
Utagawa Yoshitora (Japanese, 1836–1887) Published by Wakasaya Yoichi, Jakurindō
The text at the top of this print provides general information about France. It describes the country as having "every commodity" and "talented people" who engage in trade. The capital city of Paris is described as having "great, well-built castles, towers, gates, and avenues" and "a great government office building . . . richly decorated . . . [that] has taken one hundred years to complete"-most likely referring to the famous Parisian city hall, the Hôtel de Ville.
